Yaki Onigiri(焼きおにぎり)is not so famous among worldwide but this is one of hidden popular onigiri in Japan. In this recipe, I will show you how to make two types of grilled rice balls. In this recipe video, I will show you how to make Onigiri (Japanese Rice Balls) and its filling Okaka (bonito flakes flavor filling). Japanese rice balls are normally triangle shape but oval shape and round shape are common as well. I will introduce how to form them. Enjoy! Read More
Oyako-don is one of the popular donburi menus same as Gyu-don in Japanese cuisine. Donburi is a dish over the rice. “Oyako” means a parent in Japanese and “Don” is an abbreviation of donburi. We use chicken and egg for this dish that’s why this dish is called “Oyako-don”. This is really easy and simple dish. Also, all you need is Chicken, egg and onion (plus, seasonings)! For seasonings, I recommend to use Dashi soup stock rather than using only plain water. Please try it out!!
Do you like Wagyu (Japanese beef)? I DO! Actually, I am not a big meat eater but I enjoy Gyu-don because I use good quality Japanese beef. As you see, the main ingredients are beef and onion. So simple. There are so many gyu-don shops here in Japan. For me, Gyu-don is a comfort and satisfying fast food. The cooking process of this dish is very simple. Please choose the good quality beef as much as possible and simmer until the sauce and the juice from beef and onion all blend. In this recipe, I put mitsuba leaves on top. This is a Japanese parsley and has unique minty flavor. To add extra flavor (and happiness!), I recommend to add soft-boiled or seasoned egg on top. If you are interested in making the seasoned egg, please check here. Enjoy Gyu-don!

One of my son’s favorite foods is Soboro Donburi. Soboro means “stir-fry ingredients until being scrambled” in Japanese. You just need egg and meat. That’s all! I usually use chicken but you can also use pork and beef if you prefer. Since this recipe is so simple and easy, I cook this dish whenever my son wants. You add sugar in egg so this dish looks like between sweets and meal. (I think that’s why he likes!)
If you want to add more color (let’s say Green color ) and nutrition, I recommend to add boiled and chopped spinach, mitsuba trefoil, green beans, asparagus etc. How about decorating them between chicken and egg? Please try it out!
In this video, I introduce how to make Osekihan with sweet potato (Festive rice with sweet potato). This rice dish is a traditional festive rice dish we usually eat at celebrating situation, like passing the exam, entrance and graduation of school etc. We normally use mochi-gome (glutinous rice) instead of using normal rice. This special rice adds a “mochi-mochi” (sticky) texture that many people love! To add a little bit twist, I added sweet potato for this dish since it’s autumn (when I shoot this video). At the final touch, I recommend to sprinkle black sesame seeds and salt on top! YUM! Please try it out!!!
Cooking Japanese rice is one of the essential technique in Japanese cooking. However, in Japan, it is common to use a rice cooker. Therefore, I will show you how to cook delicious Japanese rice even if you do not have a rice cooker. The key points are to sharpen rice without water and not to wash it too much.
Why not make a beef curry using the Japanese curry roux? For the vegetables, just potatoes, carrots, and onions will be perfect! As for the beef, by all means, use Wagyu beef!
